With a Message of Hope, Pantone Announces the Color of the Year 2021

pantone color of the year 2021

With the year that 2020 has been, Pantone aims to uplift with their choice of two Colors of the Year for 2021: Illuminating and Ultimate Gray.

“The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a color combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit.”

– Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute

With the 2020 choice of Classic Blue, this combination may be surprising in that it moves away from tradition and toward boldness. It’s not the first time Pantone has chosen two colors–remember Rose Quartz and Serenity in 2016?

Pantone describes Illuminating as “a bright and cheerful yellow sparkling with vivacity, a warming yellow shade imbued with solar power.”

They say Ultimate Gray calls on “the colors of pebbles on the beach and natural elements whose weathered appearance highlights an ability to stand the test of time.”

We love the idea of a home refresh inspired by this sunny, dependable combination, whether you’re ready to go all-in on new paint colors or just want to invest in a couple of new throw pillows.

Merchandise partners for Pantone products include Copenhagen Design, Floor & Decor, Lokai, and Love Your Melon.

For more than 20 years, the Pantone Color of the year has influenced product development in fashion, home decor, and industrial design, along with product packaging and graphic design.
